All That For Something True
The ebb and flow of making an album - more like a deep sea dive if I’m honest. I have yet to go into the process of making an album knowing exactly what I’m going to make. It’s often more about improvising and experimenting until I start to sense a sonic palate forming. That can also feel like a preoccupation with certain sounds or textures that keep calling me back. I’m definitely a music before lyrics person. I feel sound so deeply and my pursuit is always about getting to a place in the music that can nudge the words out. And by nudge I really mean pry? Or coax? Lure? When I get close to the thing I really want to say I often clam up or suddenly get super sleepy or turned around. I have to act fast. I always have a mic up and ready so that when I feel the words near I can go right in. And I often use much of my first takes (especially on this new album Captain Obvious). In those moments you can hear how new the lyrics feel to me. That’s the sort of intangible thing that makes a recording special. Making an album is a lot about just being willing to go back in everyday, to keep searching and muscling through the darkness. And then when you get a little glimmer of something true, a spark almost within reach, you dive deeper.
